Updated: Mar 2, 2020

Sunday, Sept 15, 2019

  • Friday September 27th an expected 200 or more people will take part in a climate crisis demonstration as part of York Region’s response to the international Global #ClimateStrike.

  • Millions of us world-wide will walk out of our homes, work and schools to declare a climate emergency and show politicians that we need immediate bold climate action in line with what science and justice demand.

  • The climate crisis is the most urgent issue facing humanity. It is affecting millions of people world-wide with more frequent and severe storms, hurricanes, drought, flooding and melting of the arctic ice caps.

Here are some pictures of us making signs in preparation for the climate strike!

UPDATE: Friday, Sept 27, 2019 - What a great turnout from Richmond Hill and all of York Region! Over 250 people attended!

We had a perfect sunny day for our #Climate Strike. People of all ages showed up, children, youth, parents and grandparents! The grassy field at Bayview and Major Mackenzie gave us a large space to gather with our signs to hear our speakers. It was the perfect location, right beside Bayview Secondary School, where students coming out for lunch time could see our gathering and join us! We also had students from Holy Trinity School, the Toronto Waldorf School and Alexander Mackenzie High School.

We then marched from Bayview to Yonge, proudly holding our signs and getting cars to honk in support of this very important and urgent cause, and to let them know we are not going to sit by and do nothing. We demand all level of governments take immediate and bold action against the Climate Crisis.

We were then welcomed warmly by Father Matthews at St. Mary's Anglican Church where there were refreshments and seats. It was a beautiful natural setting where we could sit and relax under the shade of the trees and take in the remainder of the program. A special thank you to Father Matthews and Monica Woodley for working hard to engage the congregation at their church!

Thank you to all who came out and took action on this Global #ClimateStrike.

And especially, thank you to Dr. Kaz Higuchi from York University; and our student speakers from Holy Trinity School, Sarah Dharamshi, Julian Di Felice and Simon Leonidis!

And finally, thank you to an amazing team who put this event together! This was a huge effort that could never have happened without all the hard work of our team - Art Lightstone, Cecilia Brodie, Glenn Marshall, Jim Brodie, John Willson, Mei Wong, Monica Woodley, Wing-Shun Wu. Signs also created by Aimee Tai and Caitlin Smith. And, last but not least, our photographers - Edwin Tai and Francois Kern.
