Are you one of those people who feels like anything you do won’t make a difference when it comes to the Climate Crisis? If so, then you must not have heard of Greta Thunberg!
At the age of 15, Greta started striking in front of the Swedish parliament out of her frustration that no one was taking serious action to tackle the climate crisis. Since then, millions of students world-wide have joined her for Fridays for Future climate strike (#FridaysForFuture, #FFF, #ClimateStrike). Check out her powerful speech on TEDx.
Greta has met with many politicians and is very direct with them. She does not mince her words. In one of her many speeches, she said "We are now at a time in history where everyone with any insight of the climate crisis that threatens our civilization and the entire biosphere must speak out in clear language, no matter how uncomfortable and unprofitable that may be. We must change almost everything in our current societies. The bigger your carbon footprint is, the bigger your moral duty. The bigger your platform the bigger your responsibility.
Adults keep saying we owe it to the young people to give them hope. But I don't want your hope, I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic, I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act, I want you to act as if you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire, because it is."
Greta Thunberg has been and continues to be a huge inspiration showing the world the power of one action. She is only a teenager but is now world-renowned for her global movement and was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
It is time for adults to step up and show their support.
Neighbours for the Planet, Extinction Rebellion Richmond Hill (XR-RH) and other groups are joining Fridays for the Future, 350 org, Our Time and many other climate organizations world-wide on Sept 27th for an International climate strike, a general strike for climate.
We actually have multiple climate strikes taking place right here in Richmond Hill! Rather than hold one big strike, we thought we could get more visibility by holding multiple strikes. Currently we have 2 strikes registered, but as more people RSVP to attend, we will add more strikes.
So what can you do? Join us right here in Richmond Hill. EVERYONE is invited – parents, grandparents, teachers, workers and unions. And if you are not able to strike or take the day off, come join us during your lunch time!
