Volunteer Position: Legal Counsel, Board of Directors

Location: York Region, GTA, Ontario

Based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Neighbours for the Planet (NftP) is a non-profit organization that is committed to bringing about changes that help combat and resolve the climate crisis. By encouraging collective action and working with elected officials to advocate for appropriate policies, our aim is to have a positive and measurable impact on communities.


NftP is seeking nominations to fill one volunteer Board Member position with a passionate and enthusiastic individual who is able to dedicate their time and expertise to support this non-profit organization’s goals and objectives.


The Role


The Legal Counsel will provide legal oversight of NftP in line with good practice and in accordance with governing documents and legal requirements. They will provide legal advice and guidance to NftP and ensure that effective legal measures, controls and procedures are put in place. The legal counsel may draft legal documents related to NftP’s activities and provide advice on administrative policy and compliance issues. A legal counsel will also ensure that NftP complies with relevant laws and guidelines, interpreting laws, rules, and regulations for corporate officers. As a member of the Board of Directors they will report to the Board at regular intervals about the legal matters of the organization.


Specific Responsibilities


  • Provide legal oversight of NftP, including risk management, and related policies and procedures.

  • Explore and follow regulations to provide legal advice and assistance in drafting, and maintaining, the necessary legal documents and procedures for NftP operations

  • Provide general legal advice and support to the Board of Directors and the activities of NftP


Expectations

  • 10 hours per month.

  • Two year board role with the possibility of renewal for a second term.

  • Attend at least 10 of the 12 board meetings on an annual basis, in York Region. Currently we are meeting virtually, but when safe to do so we will be meeting in person.


Qualifications

  • Commitment to NftP’s mission and strategic directions

  • Knowledge of board governance, general legal experience and experience in dealing with environmental legal issues are all assets

  • Professional expertise and experience in law management

  • Certification: J.D. or LL.B

  • In good standing with the Law Society of Ontario

  • To represent NftP in any legal issues related to their work in helping to combat the climate crisis
