Neighbours for the Planet is excited to announce that we are hosting a Curbside Seed Giveway event to support local food production and backyard farming during the pandemic and as part of a transition to a greener future.
Event Date: Sat May 30, 10am - noon
Rain Date: Sun May 31, 10am - noon
Joanne and Jonathan Witt from Snapd Richmond Hill came to our event and took pictures. Check them out here.
It was a great day indeed, and such an inspiring start for growing our gardening and seed saving community!
Our Curbside Seed Giveaway was a great success! It was a perfect sunny day - not too hot, not too cold! We had a total of 2 dozen households show up. Snap'd came out and took pictures! We collected $55 for the Richmond Hill Food Bank as well as some food. Some people didn't have cash on them but said they would donate to the food bank online.
Here are a few pictures from the event day.
We will be making this an annual event!
And finally, stay tuned for an article that Julia has offered to write about how to harvest seeds for next year!
Thank you to our NftP Grow Your Own Food Team - Julia Fursova, Wing Wu and Dinah Gibbs.
Here is to generate some excitement about seeds, look at the bean sprouting from the earth! It is fascinating to watch them grow.
Don't forget to bring some money to our event to donate to the Richmond Hill Food Bank to help those who are especially vulnerable at this time.
Getting ready for our big day tomorrow. Weather is looking great!
Last week Aimee had made our event sign:
And yesterday she made another sign to ensure we all stay safe:
Hope to see you tomorrow!
I just realized that I did not update the forum with the change in date of our event. My apologies, I updated the calendar and the page with more details but forgot about the forum. Here it is now.
We are excited to announce we have 8 bell pepper plants to giveaway at our event. My daughter grew these. She started with seeds from fresh peppers, put in a plastic ziploc bag with a wet paper towel. They sprouted well and then were planted in soil. We planted a bunch in our vegetable garden and kept some for our curbside giveaway event. As you can see they are doing very well!
My plants are ready for the event. Got quite about 10 organic oregano, a strawberry and a few tomatoes.
Here is a picture of the packaged seeds for one of the stations. The other station will get the same. We will have hand sanitizer for people to use before touching anything at the stations.
And we continue to package more seeds...so there are more varieties to come.
NftP has decided to make this event into a small fundraiser for the Richmond Hill Food Bank to help those who are particularly vulnerable at this time. We will have a donation jar at our event for those who wish to donate. Or you can donate directly to the Richmond Hill Food Bank.
I just came back from picking up seeds from Jodi who has contributed them for our #curbsideseedgiveaway. Wow, what a great collection! Now time to package them up and add to the list of what will be available. Thank you again Jodi! Really appreciate your contribution!
We have just announced a second location for our curbside seed giveaway! Check it out here.
Here are the seeds packaged and ready to go to a loving garden!
One of our members is contributing the following seeds: Catnip, Kale, Morning glory, Blue bush beans and more! I will be picking them up in the next couple of days to package them. Thank you Jodi!
Hoping to attend. It all starts with seeds......
Here are the pictures of the beautiful beans I will be giving away! They are such a satisfying plant to grow. The assorted beans are from the 'Magic Beans' garden I planted with my daughter when she was a bit younger. We got different kinds of beans in Bulk Barn and planted a row of each to observe the differences in leaves, flowers and pods. It was such a fun project! I recommend those with young kids, age 8 and up to try Magic Beans garden :-)
Awesome, I have extra oregano and tomato seedlings that I can share, as well as some tomato and snow pea seeds.
