Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators - Greenhouse gas emissions

Updated: Feb 26, 2020

Environment and Climate Change Canada published this document in April 2019.

"Greenhouse gas emissions Climate change is one of the most important environmental issues of our time. Climate change is caused by the increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. These increases are primarily due to human activities such as the use of fossil fuels or agriculture. The indicators report estimates of Canada's emissions and removals of greenhouse gases.

Key results

  • Canada's total GHG emissions in 2017 were 716 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2 eq)

  • The decrease in emissions since 2005 was primarily driven by reduced emissions from the electricity generation sector"
